How Often Should You Groom Your Dog?
It is one of the most common questions we hear, and the honest answer is that it depends on your dog. Coat type, breed, activity level, and even the season all play a part. As a general rule, most dogs benefit from a professional groom every four to eight weeks, with regular brushing in between. Here is how to figure out the right schedule for your pup.
It starts with coat type
Your dog's coat is the biggest factor in how often they need grooming.
Short, smooth coats (like Beagles or Boxers) are low maintenance and often only need a bath and tidy every eight to twelve weeks, plus regular brushing to control shedding.
Double coats (like Huskies, Golden Retrievers, and German Shepherds) need regular brushing year round and a thorough groom roughly every six to ten weeks, especially during heavy shedding seasons.
Long or curly coats (like Poodles, Doodles, Shih Tzus, and Yorkies) grow continuously and mat easily, so they usually need a full groom every four to six weeks to stay comfortable and tangle free.
Lifestyle and season matter too
An active dog who loves muddy trails and lake swims will need more frequent baths than a homebody. Shedding also ramps up in spring and fall, so many double-coated dogs benefit from an extra de-shedding visit during those months. If your dog has allergies or sensitive skin, your groomer and vet can help you find the right rhythm.
Do not forget nails and ears
Grooming is about more than a haircut. Most dogs need their nails trimmed every three to four weeks, and floppy-eared breeds often need regular ear cleaning to prevent infections. If you hear nails clicking on the floor, it is time for a trim.
Signs your dog is due for a groom
Even if you are between appointments, watch for these cues: visible matting or tangles, a dull or dirty coat, a noticeable smell, scratching or discomfort, overgrown nails, or hair covering the eyes. Any of these means it is time to book.
Brushing between visits makes a big difference
Regular brushing at home keeps the coat healthy, spreads natural oils, catches tangles early, and stretches the time between professional grooms. Even a few minutes a few times a week goes a long way, especially for longer coats.
